‘END-DATE‘ 31/12/2025 for halon 1211, but...
At the end of this year 31/12/2025 the possibility of using fire extinguishers containing halon 1211 for the protection of cabins and crew compartments will end. Even those recently purchased and in operational condition.
On 10/03/2025 EASA published in General publications ‘Halon replacement in the aviation industry February 2025’ reminding of the ‘end-date‘.
Replacements for halon 1211 such as FM-200, FE-36 are no longer possible, and others are technically and economically non-alternative. By other Regulation (EU) 2024/573, from 01/01/2025 their sale (FM-200, FE-36) in EU is prohibited.
On the basis of Article 9 ‘Critical uses of halons’ of Regulation (EC) 2024/590 in January 2025 I together with AOPA POLAND applied to the Minister for Climate and the Environment Republic of Poland for request of a derogation from end-date to the EU Commission.
- If you consider that after 31/12/2025 you can still protect cabins and crew compartments with fire extinguishers containing halon 1211, make such a request to your competent authority of the Member States to request to the the EU Commission for derogation.
A special committee meets in spring and autumn 2025 and may implement a new ‘end-date‘
In Republic of Poland, this proposal was supported by Maciej Lasek Secretary of State in the Ministry for Infrastructure Republic of Poland and Julian Rotter President of the Civil Aviation Authority in Poland.
You will find the content of the submitted request below.
Time is running out. With no practical replacement in sight, Halon based extinguishers must be retained for a few years more.
Bonjour,
Interesting details! I am expecting a lot from the next committee and also from French authority.
Swap 'old' halon have unquestionably environment sense, but in other hands mandatory replacement existing/flying extinguishers just because to do that is a nonsense ($$$) and wasting resources, taking account that 99,99% (I hope it will be 100%) of them will not be discharge till end of life limit and can be safety recycle after that. So I think it's a good move, but afraid that there will be no one brave enough to change decision. 🤔
